Yves Hasselmann was born in 1948 in Belfort, France. After earning a philosophy degree in Besançon in 1971, he taught in the French national education system before transitioning to work as a freelance piano teacher. Painting remained a parallel pursuit throughout his studies and early career. His first solo exhibition was held in Paris in 1976, following a competition organized by an art gallery, and he has since shown his work in numerous galleries and contemporary art fairs. Hasselmann’s practice draws on his engagement with both visual art and music, a dual focus shaped by his encounter with painters Jean Messagier and Ladislas Kijno at age 25, which introduced him to abstraction. His paintings are distinguished by precise control of form and color, applied with gestures that recall his movement at the piano.
