Rhea Callen’s practice centers on material, space, and states of tension, questioning how forces can be perceived as conditions. Her work began with the UNDER PRESSURE series, where internal tensions and structural loads are made visible, and progressed through STATICS to the current STEERING STATE series. In STATIK, movement is constrained and balanced, a dynamic that becomes more pronounced in HALTEZUSTAT, where tension is held within the pictorial space rather than depicted. Using a minimal approach, Callen employs material, layering, and surface as functional sources of energy. Her works focus on the suspended moment before movement, holding energy in balance without release.
