Simon Thon trained at the Ruhr Academy of Fine Arts before moving into advertising and later establishing himself as a freelance photographer. While his photography maintains a distinct artistic sensibility, painting remains central to his practice. Working in his studio, Thon’s paintings have shifted from early figurative realism toward greater abstraction, reflecting his resistance to fixed stylistic boundaries. He approaches art as an open process, using painting as both personal communication and a means of grappling with contemporary social tensions. Underlying his work are the contrasts and frictions of society, which bring a sense of immediacy to his canvases.
