Richard Higham is an Auckland-based painter known for large-scale acrylic canvases that explore the colour, structure, and atmosphere of New Zealand landscapes. Drawing on sources such as coastal vegetation, cultivated gardens, native flora, and the country’s shifting light, Higham works with layered surfaces, expressive marks, and heightened colour. His paintings are shaped less by specific sites than by recollections of foliage, reflected light, and the changing seasons, evoking the emotional presence of natural environments. After many years of studio practice, Higham continues to examine the connections between landscape, memory, and atmosphere within contemporary New Zealand painting.
