Pierre Soulages (b. 1919, Rodez, France) is a pivotal figure in abstract painting, recognized for his lifelong focus on the color black. Across more than seventy years, Soulages has developed a practice centered on what he termed 'outrenoir'—'beyond black'—employing the color as both surface and medium. Through works such as "Peinture 202 x 453 cm, 29 juin 1979," he used rich textures to invite changing perceptions of light and form. Soulages' bold, reductive style and innovative approach have earned him international acclaim and a lasting legacy within twentieth-century art.
