Matthias Hürten is a self-taught painter committed to abstract work, shaping a practice defined by experimentation and personal technique. His paintings emerge from inner motivation, conveying a sense of immediacy and authenticity. In more recent works, Hürten responds to contemporary global crises. Encounters with the “Neumarkt der Künstler” in Cologne in the late 1960s and a focused exhibition of Lucio Fontana’s work significantly influenced his direction, as did the “Westkunst” exhibition in Cologne.
