M. Kara, formerly Müberra Karamanoğlu, is a Turkish-born artist based between New York and Ankara. Her practice focuses on layered portraiture, treating the figure as a mutable surface altered by cutting, veiling, and transformation. Drawing on personal memory and the textile traditions of Turkey’s Black Sea region, she incorporates burlap, rope, thread, tulle, and fabric collage. These materials introduce both physical and emotional resonance, interrupting and shifting the image. Through processes of layering, cutting, and stitching, Kara creates works that dwell between visibility and concealment, with identity rendered unresolved and continually in flux.
