Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) was an Italian-Argentinian artist known for redefining the relation between art, space, and technology in the twentieth century. Raised in Argentina by Italian parents, Fontana developed an enduring interest in spatial concepts, which led him to found the 'Spatialism' movement. His most recognized works, including 'Concetto spaziale, Attese' ('Spatial Concept, Waiting'), feature slashed or punctured canvases that introduce real space into the picture plane. Fontana’s fascination with the cosmos and contemporary technology shaped his approach, integrating new materials and ideas from architecture. His influence remains pivotal to the evolution of conceptual and contemporary art.
