Keith Haring’s work, widely imitated in postwar art, presents unique challenges for authentication, particularly in the absence of a complete published catalogue raisonné and following the 2012 closure of the Keith Haring Foundation’s authentication committee. For paintings, tarpaulins, and works on paper, provenance and exhibition history are crucial to establishing authenticity. Prints, primarily screenprints produced between 1982 and 1990, are typically referenced in the Littmann catalogue and signed in pencil with edition details, such as '14/200 Haring 87.' Attention is paid to details like edition size, margins, and signature placement. Some editions, including the 1990 Icons portfolio, came with a certificate signed by estate executor Julia Gruen, which, if available, should accompany the work.
