Based in Munich, Karolin Schumann is an abstract painter whose work centers on complex color fields, amorphous forms, and expressive mark-making. Her paintings emerge through an intuitive process involving overpainting, layering, and covering, using materials such as acrylic, charcoal, chalk, ash, and collage. Schumann’s practice moves between sculptural density and transparent surfaces, visualizing the intersections of time, memory, and perception. Self-taught since the early 2000s, she furthered her training through workshops and a two-year course with Prof. Hannes Bayer at the Leonardo Art Academy in Salzburger Land. Since 2010, she has directed studio zierputz in Munich, where she also curates exhibitions and, since 2023, operates a pop-up gallery for contemporary painting.
