The market for Basquiat’s work is shaped by the rarity of lifetime prints and the absence of a current authentication committee or catalogue raisonné; the Estate's committee was disbanded in 2012. His paintings, largely held by institutions, command the highest prices in the contemporary market. Private collectors most often encounter original drawings or unique works on paper, where thorough provenance—including gallery invoices, exhibition histories, and a clear ownership chain—is essential. Lifetime prints, such as the 1982 Anatomy screenprints and a few 1983 editions, are hand-signed, while most others are posthumous editions signed by Basquiat’s sisters and published by Pace Prints or Flatiron Editions. Due to forgeries of estate and committee stamps, authentication relies on publisher records, paper, and edition numbers rather than marks. All Basquiat works on Singulart are sold with documented provenance and certificates of authenticity, sourced through specialist galleries.
