For more than forty years, Jean-Jacques Marie has pursued an independent, self-taught artistic practice marked by formal experimentation and personal freedom. Initially working in figurative modes shaped by Fauvism and Expressionism, he later embraced gestural abstraction after discovering Chinese ink and Asian avant-garde calligraphy. Marie’s process is guided by instinct and emotion, with each work emerging from an internal state rather than a predetermined plan. His paintings juxtapose energy and restraint, allowing material to flow and gesture to shape the composition. Rather than conveying specific messages, he focuses on the painting’s immediate presence and its capacity for direct, wordless impact.
