Renate Buchberger’s practice encompasses both painting and sculpture. Her paintings often draw on the dynamic energy of live rock and pop performances, capturing the influence these spontaneous stage moments have had on musicians and audiences since the late 1960s. Viewed closely, these works reflect aspects of the baby boomer generation. In contrast, her sculptural work centers on heads, following a traditional approach to portraiture. Buchberger works in marble—sourced from Italy, Ticino, and other regions—as well as basalt and travertine. She also creates papier-mâché figures, and develops objects and sculptures from wood, steel, and found materials, frequently employing upcycling techniques in her process.
