Credentials

  • Works on commission
Ian Mont (b. 1972, Puerto Padre) creates paintings shaped by the fractured memories of exile. After exhibiting in Cuba throughout the 1990s, he relocated to Spain in 2006 on a scholarship and did not return. For over a decade, Mont worked in technology, unable to paint or retrieve the artworks left behind. Since 2018, he has resumed working with oil, burlap, and other rough materials, pairing traditional techniques with artificial intelligence and historical archives. Drawing on photographs from Ellis Island and colonial records, his recent series—including "Iconoclasms" and "Animals in Conflict"—dissect sacred and national symbols, exposing their underlying violence. Based in Barcelona, Mont pursues a visual archaeology of Atlantic migration, focusing on testimony over beauty.
