Hjalmar Thelen (1962–2017) was a Berlin-based painter and draftsman known for observing faces, places, and everyday moments often overlooked. Working on paper, cardboard, and canvas, he produced more than 2,000 pieces distinguished by restraint and careful detail. Self-taught, Thelen approached each subject with clarity and respect, favoring quiet, figurative scenes that reveal subtle narratives. His studio doubled as his apartment, yet he preferred cycling through Berlin’s waterways with a field easel and paints, capturing the city’s quiet aspects.
