Leonie Brown

South Africa

Credentials

  • Established Artist
  • Major permanent collection
  • Works on commission
Stitching directly into the painted surface, the artist introduces thread as a physical act of repair that both disrupts and reconfigures the image. The needle’s resistance and the traces it leaves—wounds, scars, and fibre—are integral to the work, rendering the process visible beyond paint alone. Paint operates in fluid layers, while thread imposes structure through line and depth, marking labour and mending. Drawing from the concept of neuroplasticity, the practice reflects the brain’s capacity to form new pathways through repetition after trauma. Each stitched mark records both injury and restoration, acknowledging the lasting presence of repair without erasure.
