Hjalmar Thelen (1962–2017) était un peintre et dessinateur berlinois qui rendait visible l'ordinaire : visages, lieux et scènes du quotidien. Ses œuvres, sur papier, carton ou toile, sont directes, concentrées et empreintes d'une précision discrète. Sans formation académique, mais avec un œil clair et une touche délicate, il a créé plus de 2 000 œuvres. Son art est discret, figuratif, narratif, et marqué par le respect de ce qui est représenté. Son atelier était son appartement, mais il aimait surtout voyager à vélo, armé d'un chevalet de campagne et de peintures, le long des canaux, rivières et lacs de Berlin.
